When Calgary's new race track opened, the Herald asked me to cover opening day. I wanted to see more than the ribbon cutting and the casino, so I visited the back stables, where the standard-bred drivers revealed what a big deal it was to finally have an active track again in our city.

I'm not a sports writer per se, but I knew that a brother-sister combo playing on the same team was rare in the wide world of sports. I pitched it to the Calgary Herald and they contracted me to write the story.
